The present day Spanish Colonial Fort was built in 1672 and was completed in 1695 making it 338 years old. The Castillo or "Castle" was originally built as a fortress to protect the Spanish fleet traveling through the gulf stream carrying the precious treasures. The fortresses architecture is unique in that it was built of coquina masonry and is the oldest masonry fort in North America, a prime example of the Bastion System of fortification. The Castillo de San Marcos is open daily as re-enactors provide presentations on the life and time of the colonial period including historic weapons demonstrations on weekends and also special events. The daily tours are designed to be self-guided with exhibits, maps and historical timeline. After the sun sets participate in a haunted tour outside the Fort walls provided by a St Augustine ghost tour company.
At the end of the day it is comforting to know that your place is just a few blocks away at the Carriage Way, it is the way to stay for your Florida getaway.
