St Augustine FL celebrates its 445th Birthday

This coming Saturday, September 4th, St Augustine FL celebrates its 445th Birthday.  Long before Jamestown, the Spaniards led by Admiral don Pedro Menendez de Aviles established St. Augustine as a Spanish colony and military base against the French trespassers in La Florida on September 8, 1565.

St. Augustine, the oldest continuously occupied European city will be celebrating with an authentic recreation of its landing.  The "First Thanksgiving" will be re-enacted at 4:45 p.m. on the grounds of Ponce de Leon's Fountain of Youth.  Also, this weekend will be an encampment of Timucan Indians on the grounds of the Fountain of Youth, which was originally a large native American village called Seloy.  There will also be a Spanish funeral procession as 16th century Spanish soldiers carry the actual casket of Pedro Mendez to its new home int the Mission Nombre de Dios Museum.

This will be a wonderful weekend to travel to St. Augustine and help celebrate First America and there is no better way to stay than in a St Augustine bed and breakfast, which is an easy walk away.  Carriage Way Bed and Breakfast is a better way to stay.

Anastasia State Park - St Augustine Beaches

Anastasia State Park has one of our favorite St Augustine Beaches and is one of the best Florida State Parks for beach activities.  It is located over the Lions Bridge on Anastasia Island and just a 10 minute drive from the downtown historic district of St. Augustine.

Eco tourism is abundant for birding and once you are on the beach you can walk for an hour and a half to the North for a private beach hike or bicycle ride.  While you are in the state park, check out Anastasia water sports for beach rentals for kayaking, windsurfing, paddle boarding and Hobie catamaran sailing.

Although there is good camping in Anastasia State Park, it is always better to stay in the comforts of your St Augustine bed and breakfast.  Carriage Way Bed and Breakfast is a better way to stay.

St Augustine Things to do

Hotel Ponce de Leon
When you travel to Florida, St. Augustine is the Florida vacation spot that you do not want to miss.  Here is our short list of St Augustine things to do:
  1. Explore the Castillo de San Marcos, the Spanish fort that took 23 years to complete and construction was started in 1672.
  2. Take the Flagler Legacy Tour at the Hotel Ponce de Leon now known as Flagler College.  Henry Flagler enlisted the help of designer Louis Comfort Tiffany and Thomas Edison.
  3. Climb the St. Augustine Lighthouse and while you are there visit the Maritime Museum to see the new St. Augustine shrimping and boat building exhibit.
  4. Stroll down St. George Street and enjoy the many shops, eateries, and pubs.  Be sure to explore the other fine establishments on the side streets of the oldest city.

  6. The Memorial Presbyterian Church, built by Henry Flagler in 1889, is a fine example of Venetian Renaissance architecture and memorial to his only daughter.
  7. Visit the Basilica - Cathedral, built in 1793 and partially financed by the Spanish royal treasury.
  8. Step back in time to a life in the 1740's at the Colonial Spanish Quarter, a living history museum.

Aviles Street - St. Augustine's oldest Street

Something new is happening to St. Augustine's Oldest Street, Aviles Street.  During the next 45 days, Aviles Street is undergoing a face lift that will transform this quaint little street in the nation's oldest city.  The new street scape will feature new brick streets, wider sidewalks for benches and outside dining, as well as streetlights.  It is nice to know that the businesses will remain open during construction.

Carl Halbirt, who is the City of St. Augustine's archaeologist, has determined that Aviles Street has been a street since the late 1500's.  The street is anchored by two museums, the Spanish Military Hospital on the North end and the Father O'Reilly House Museum toward the North end.  While visiting St Augustine stroll into Gaufres and Goods for pierogies or purchase a painting at Aviles Street Gallery.  One of our favorite shops on Aviles is Dan Holiday Leather, where he will make a pair of custom sandals for you.

We look forward to dining in the under the lights on Aviles Street and strolling home to a St Augustine Bed and breakfast.  When you vacation in Florida, Carriage Way is the way to stay for your Florida getaway.
