Flagler College hosts presentation on the Cross Florida Barge Canal

Flagler College will be hosting historians Steven Noll and David Tegeder as they provide a presentation on the Cross Florida Barge Canal.  In their book "Ditch of Dreams:  The Cross Florida Barge Canal and the Struggle for Florida's Future" the authors will discuss the pork barrel project and the nearly two centuries of planning and developing the Canal in order to reduce shipping times and costs.

The project was ultimately stopped in 1971 because of environmental impacts, but took nearly 20 more years to cancel further continuation of the project.  To this day one can still see portions of the project as one travels across North Florida.

The presentation will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 29th, 2010 in the Flagler Room at Flagler College and is open to the public and sponsored by the St. Augustine Historical Society.  If you are traveling to St. Augustine and plan on attending the presentation, stay for the night.  Carriage Way Bed and Breakfast is a better way to stay while in St. Augustine.

St. Augustine FL is one of the Best Destinations to Retire

St. Augustine FL is one of the best destinations to retire according to U.S. News and World Reports and joins such cities as Charleston, Savannah and Santa Fe.  St. Augustine is the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in the United States and founded by the Spanish in 1565.

The magazine's recognition was based upon several factors including the presence of national historic monuments such as the Castillo de San Marco, the presence of museums like the Lightner Museum, Spanish Military Hospital, the Oldest House Museum and the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum.  St. Augustine also offers plenty of amenities for retires and a good quality of life.

There are certainly plenty of things to see and do when people travel to Florida for a St Augustine vacation.  Over the past 19 years the Carriage Way Bed and Breakfast has seen a number of travelers make the decision to live within the history instead of choosing the oldest city as a Florida vacation spot.

St Augustine Fl - Ponce de Leon's Fountain of Youth

This is a great weekend to visit St Augustine Fl and see Ponce de Leon's Fountain of Youth.  This weekend St. Augustine celebrates 445 years of existence.  Long before Pedro Menendez arrived there was a large Timucuan Village called Seloy on the grounds of the Fountain of Youth.

This weekend at the Fountain of Youth will be an encampment of Timucan Indians and 16th century Spanish soldiers as they reenact the first "Thanksgiving" in America.  Of course while here, you may also visit the Discovery Globe, Navigator's Planetarium, Indian Burial Grounds, and a Shipwreck Exhibit.

In order to celebrate the longevity of the oldest continuously occupied European city and while visiting St. Augustine, enjoy a truly unique experience by staying in St Augustine.  Carriage Way is the way to stay while visiting Florida.
